It was built by Colonel Nathaniel Burwell, a prominent Virginian, and General Daniel Morgan, a Revolutionary War hero of Saratoga and Cowpens. It also anchored Burwell's development of his Clarke County holdings.","narrative":"Burwell-Morgan Mill, also called Millwood Mill, is a gristmill beside Spout Run in Millwood, Clarke County, Virginia. Built around 1785, it has a stone basement and first level topped by a frame second story and attic, measuring roughly forty-five by sixty feet. Colonel Nathaniel Burwell and General Daniel Morgan, a Revolutionary War hero of Saratoga and Cowpens, chose the site for the fall of the stream and went into partnership to build and manage it. The mill led Burwell to expand his business interests in the village, including a tanyard, another mill and a distillery. Ownership passed through several families, and the Garvin family added the wooden upper story after 1872. The mill ran continuously until 1943. Restoration reopened the head race, rebuilt the mahogany water wheel and reused gears from a mill built near Middleburg around 1750. Its association with Burwell and Morgan is considered its greatest value.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Colonel Nathaniel Burwell and General Daniel Morgan (builders)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Unoccupied and under restoration at the time of the form, with plans to return it to operation and use the second story as a meeting place; it had operated continuously until 1943.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.089302-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/6802/41680242/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000233.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000233/b1eb898ab9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000233/b1eb898ab9-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Sevenofnine7o9 at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Burwell_morgan_mill.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Sevenofnine7o9 at en.wikipedia</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Burwell_morgan_mill.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680242","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burwell-Morgan_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712114"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/clarke-county/burwell-morgan-mill-69000233/"}
