It also had historical interest as an important social center for the area in the late eighteenth century, hosting George Washington and Lafayette.","narrative":"Old Mansion is a one-and-one-half-story brick house near Bowling Green in Caroline County, Virginia, dating to about 1670. The original block has dormers, a jerkin head roof and exterior chimneys, with Flemish bond brickwork above an English bond water table and nine-over-nine windows under rubbed brick arches. A frame addition with a gambrel roof was added to the rear in the mid-eighteenth century, and a later porch covers the first-floor facade. Nearly all original interior features survive, and the house has never been restored. It was first called Bowling Green, after the large bowling green on its lawn. The name changed when Major John Hoomes, the first owner, donated land for a courthouse and gave the estate's name to the town. The property had a race track around the lawn and was known for its stables. George Washington and some of his troops camped on the lawn, and Lafayette was honored at a banquet there after Yorktown. It was listed for its architecture and its role as a social center.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and never restored; the form marks it as occupied and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.456176-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/6799/41679973/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000227.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000227/70a55d67c3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000227/70a55d67c3-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Mansion,_State_Route_2_vicinity,_Bowling_Green_(Caroline_County,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Mansion,_State_Route_2_vicinity,_Bowling_Green_(Caroline_County,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03000439","name":"Bowling Green Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/bowling-green-historic-district-03000439/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679973","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Mansion","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7084470"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/caroline-county/old-mansion-69000227/"}
