It centers on a two-story Flemish bond brick house built about 1800 by Samuel Pannill, with many surviving outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination cites the fine interior woodwork, which is surprising given the simple exterior. It also stresses the survival of most of the outbuildings, which is especially valuable because they represent a variety of plantation functions.","narrative":"Green Hill is a plantation complex in Campbell County, Virginia, north of the Staunton River and southwest of Long Island. The main house is a two-story, five-bay Flemish bond brick building with a gable roof, modillioned cornice and two interior end chimneys. A one-story rear ell was probably built about 1800, and the front section was added soon after by Samuel Pannill, who bought the original land in 1797. Pannill served in the Virginia General Assembly, sat on the Board of Public Works and was president of the Roanoke Navigation Company. Inside, the house has notable woodwork, including a paneled chimney wall, a provincial entablature with reeding and scalloping, and a large mantel in the ell. Many outbuildings survive, among them a frame kitchen with an eighteen-foot stone chimney, a stone laundry, slave quarters, log barns, an ice house, a tobacco barn and a granary, linked by wide stone walkways. The variety of surviving farm buildings is the main reason for its listing.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"Samuel Pannill (builder)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked fair; the form lists the property as occupied, with a ruined stone stable among the outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.369114-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/6799/41679916/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000226.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000226/0d597f21ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000226/0d597f21ec-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Green_Hill_Plantation_%26_Main_House,_State_Route_728,_Long_Island_vicinity_(Campbell_County,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Green_Hill_Plantation_%26_Main_House,_State_Route_728,_Long_Island_vicinity_(Campbell_County,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679916","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Hill_(Long_Island,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712391"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/campbell-county/green-hill-69000226/"}
