It is also tied to Benjamin H. Epperson, a lawyer, legislator and railroad promoter who represented Texas in the Supreme Court case Texas vs. White.","narrative":"This two-story frame house at 409 South Alley Street in Jefferson, Texas, is an Italian Villa, a type the nomination calls rare in the region. It shows the shift from Greek Revival to Victorian design. The east facade has five bays, a segmental-arched entrance with double doors, transom and sidelights, and a one-story porch across the front. A five-sided bay extends on the south side. A cupola with a widow's walk rises from the nearly flat tin roof. Its windows hold blue, green, yellow and red glass for the four seasons, which gave the house its name, House of the Seasons. Inside, a central hall has two rooms on each side, and the open stair hall rises to the cupola. Four Italian marble mantels and frescos survive. The house is also linked to Benjamin H. Epperson, who moved to Jefferson in 1871. He was a lawyer, state representative and early president of the Memphis, El Paso, and Pacific Railroad. He represented Texas in Texas vs. White.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italian Villa, transitional between Greek Revival and Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in fair condition on its original site, occupied and used as a private residence; designated a Texas historic landmark in 1965.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.67723-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/10/9729/40972910/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/69000207.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000207/8e4035bd08-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000207/8e4035bd08-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EppersonMcNuttHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EppersonMcNuttHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"71000949","name":"Jefferson Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/jefferson-historic-district-71000949/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972910","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002263"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/marion-county/epperson-mcnutt-house-69000207/"}
