The form also calls it a rare example of beauty and craftsmanship on the frontier. It was recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey and praised by the Ohio Historical Society and the Architects Society of Ohio.","narrative":"Kirtland Temple, also called the House of the Lord, is a three-story building of oak-framed construction with two-foot-thick stone walls, located on Chillicothe Road in Kirtland, Ohio. Early Latter Day Saints began it in 1833 after Joseph Smith Jr. directed them to build a temple. The cornerstone was laid on July 24, 1833, and the building was dedicated on March 27, 1836. Joseph Smith served as foreman of the construction and the quarry, Jacob Bump was master builder, and Sidney Rigdon and Brigham Young worked on the project. Beyond worship, the building served as a school for children, a training center for lay ministers and a lecture hall. Most of the congregation left Kirtland in 1837 and 1838. Legal title passed to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1880. The form values it as a rare example of fine craftsmanship on the frontier, and its appearance remains largely unchanged apart from replaced plaster and added modern systems.","period_of_significance":"1833-1838","architect_builder":"Jacob Bump, master builder; Joseph Smith, Jr., foreman of construction and the stone quarry","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent or good condition, open to the public as a museum and religious site; appearance fundamentally unchanged, with interior and exterior plaster replaced and electric lighting, central heating and a sprinkler system added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.678084-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/69000145.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000145/4cb05ee42a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000145/4cb05ee42a-1600.webp","licence":"No restrictions","author":"Internet Archive Book Images","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historical_Collections_of_Ohio-_An_Encyclopedia_of_the_State;_History_Both_General_and_Local,_Geography_with_Descriptions_of_Its_Counties,_Cities_and_Villages,_Its_Agricultural,_Manufacturing,_Mining_(14586424199).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Internet Archive Book Images</a>, <a href=\"https://www.flickr.com/commons/usage/\" rel=\"license noopener\">No restrictions</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historical_Collections_of_Ohio-_An_Encyclopedia_of_the_State;_History_Both_General_and_Local,_Geography_with_Descriptions_of_Its_Counties,_Cities_and_Villages,_Its_Agricultural,_Manufacturing,_Mining_(14586424199).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989607","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirtland_Temple","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q788604"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lake-county/kirtland-temple-69000145/"}
