Sergeant built it as a home for his bride, Abigail Williams, and modified the center-hall plan with a rear study and a separate rear hall so Indians could reach his office without passing through the main rooms. It is also a little-altered example of Georgian architecture on the New England frontier.","narrative":"Built in 1739, the Mission House in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, was the home of the Reverend John Sergeant, the first missionary to the Housatonic Indians, and his bride, Abigail Williams. The two-and-a-half story frame and clapboard house follows a Georgian center-hall plan, with a Connecticut Valley doorway on its five-bay front and chimneys set unusually toward the rear. Sergeant adapted the layout for his work: a small study behind the parlor and a long rear hall with its own eastern entrance let Indians reach his office without passing through the family rooms. Sergeant's family lived there until 1870, and the house was sold in 1879. By 1928 it was unoccupied and badly in need of repair. It was then taken down in numbered pieces and reconstructed on Main Street, furnished with mid-eighteenth century pieces. Since 1948 the Trustees of Reservations have maintained it and opened it to visitors, alongside gardens and small visitor buildings.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (1739)","architect_builder":"Reverend John Sergeant","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained in excellent condition by the Trustees of Reservations and open to visitors as a museum; the house was dismantled and reconstructed on its present site in 1928.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.747877-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7936/63793635/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/68000038_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/68000038/f379093ba4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/68000038/f379093ba4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daderot at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mission_House_(Stockbridge,_Massachusetts).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mission_House_(Stockbridge,_Massachusetts).JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01001466","name":"Main Street Historic District (Additional Documentation)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/main-street-historic-district-additional-documentation-01001466/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793635","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_House_(Stockbridge,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6878618"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/mission-house-68000038/"}
