Built in 1749 and rebuilt in stone from the early 1760s to about 1795.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it probably the finest example of a Spanish presidio in the United States. It defended the missions of southern Texas and served as the principal military post under Spanish and Mexican rule. It was also the scene of the Goliad massacre of Fannin's men in March 1836 during the Texas Revolution.","narrative":"Presidio Nuestra Senora de Loreto de La Bahia is a Spanish colonial fort on a hill above the San Antonio River near Goliad, Texas. First built in 1749 with wooden buildings and grass huts inside a palisade, it was gradually rebuilt in white limestone from the early 1760s until about 1795. The one-story quadrangle has four rounded corner bastions, three gates, and rooms for officers, troops, storehouses, workshops and an arsenal. A chapel built between 1775 and 1790 stands near the northwest corner, with thick stone walls, a square bell tower and a groin-vaulted interior. The post defended the missions of southern Texas and was a principal military post under Spanish and Mexican rule. It saw several battles during the Mexican revolution against Spain and later the Texas Revolution, including the 1836 killing of more than 400 of Fannin's men. After abandonment and decay, restoration ran from 1963 to 1967. Today it operates as a museum, and the chapel is an active church.","period_of_significance":"1749, 1836","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored 1963-67 to its 1836 appearance; the grounds serve as a museum and the chapel is an active church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.46346-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/9709/40970933/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/67000024_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/67000024/6e88b7bf93-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/67000024/6e88b7bf93-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Ernest Mettendorf","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Presidio_La_Bah%C3%ADa.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ernest Mettendorf</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Presidio_La_Bah%C3%ADa.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01000258","name":"Goliad State Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/goliad-state-park-historic-district-01000258/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970933","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidio_La_Bah%C3%ADa","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7241532"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/goliad-county/presidio-nuestra-senora-de-loreto-de-la-bahia-67000024/"}
