It keeps a wealth of original details in its doors, windows and fireplaces, along with a medieval-style timber frame in the garret. It has changed very little, and its Dutch fireplace with pendant hood and mantel shelf is described as probably the only one of its kind left in America.","narrative":"Built in 1694 by Jean Hasbrouck, a native of Calais, France, this stone farmhouse on Huguenot Street in New Paltz began as a single room. Before 1712 it was enlarged into a central-hall plan with two rooms on each side, providing space for a family and a store. Its walls are fieldstone laid in clay, and a broad gable and massive roof cover a garret with finished rooms and an open space once used to store grain and hay. Heavy hewn floor beams and a network of pegged collar beams and struts support the roof, which spans 41 feet. The southwestern kitchen holds a Dutch fireplace that keeps its pendant hood and mantel shelf, described as probably the only such example left in America. Although the windows have been altered, the doors and other details remain representative. Because the house has changed so little, it is regarded as an outstanding variant of Dutch Colonial building. The Huguenot Historical Society owns it and opens it to the public.","period_of_significance":"17th and 18th centuries (specific dates 1694, c. 1712)","architect_builder":"Jean Hasbrouck","architectural_style":"Dutch Colonial stone architecture","criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained in superb condition by the Huguenot Historical Society and regularly open to the public as a museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.990736-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/67000016_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/67000016/f85a7181cf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/67000016/f85a7181cf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jean_Hasbrouck_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jean_Hasbrouck_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000578","name":"Huguenot Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/huguenot-street-historic-district-66000578/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316089","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Hasbrouck_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1685563"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/hasbrouck-jean-house-67000016/"}
