It is a one-and-a-half-story Dutch Colonial dwelling of fieldstone, brick and wood, and it is now owned by the city and run as a house museum.","why_significant":"The form describes it as the last typical Dutch Colonial farmhouse left on Manhattan Island. It is called an excellent and little altered example of the final refinements of the Flemish Colonial style in the late 18th century, showing the varied building materials the Dutch used. It also illustrates the history of the Dyckman family, who held one of the largest farms in Manhattan.","narrative":"Perched on a high ledge facing Broadway, this 1783 farmhouse is the last typical Dutch Colonial farmhouse left on Manhattan Island. William Dyckman built it to replace an earlier house of 1748 that the British burned during the Revolutionary War, and some salvaged materials are thought to have been reused. The one-and-a-half-story dwelling has heavy fieldstone walls, a red brick front, wide white clapboard gable ends and a sweeping low-pitched gambrel roof that curves out over long front and rear porches. Inside are four rooms and a hall on the first floor, an open center staircase and Federal-style decorative details. The Dyckmans farmed one of the largest holdings in Manhattan. Descendants restored the house with period furnishings and gave it to the city in 1915. The grounds include a reconstructed smokehouse and a Hessian soldiers' hut. The house was designated a landmark for its fine, little altered example of late Dutch colonial building.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"William Dyckman","architectural_style":"Dutch Colonial / Flemish Colonial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by New York City and operated as a house museum; restored beginning in 1915 and given to the city that year by Dyckman descendants.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.67974-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/67000014_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/67000014/2a12899485-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/67000014/2a12899485-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dyckman_House_Bwy_cloudy_jeh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dyckman_House_Bwy_cloudy_jeh.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315816","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyckman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2865930"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/dyckman-william-house-67000014/"}
