It is owned by the City of Richmond and used as a museum.","why_significant":"It was Marshall's home for 45 years, through his service as Chief Justice. Because his court duties took him away less than six months a year, many of his important opinions were probably written here. The nomination holds that no other site is so closely associated with him.","narrative":"Built in 1790, this square brick house at Ninth and Marshall Streets in Richmond was the home of John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, for 45 years. It originally held six rooms and a basement with a wine cellar, and a downstairs bedroom was added at the rear in 1810. Exterior decoration is limited to a pedimented gable, a modillioned cornice and two small porches, and the interior is plainly finished and furnished with original Marshall pieces and contemporary ones. Marshall's court duties in Washington and on circuit kept him away less than six months a year, so he spent much of his time here, and many of his opinions were probably written in the house. He also hosted leading figures of American life there. The City of Richmond owns the property, and a preservation association administers it as a museum. A new roof and extensive restoration work were planned when the form was prepared.","period_of_significance":"1790-1835","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Good condition, altered, on its original site, used as a museum.
