He bought the 150-acre Marshall Warner farm in 1896, and 129.02 acres remain. Architect Henry Bacon designed the stucco studio, built in 1897, and the 2½-story Georgian Revival residence that replaced the old farmhouse in 1901. The studio has a 30-foot cube workroom, 30-foot-high double doors built for an equestrian statue of George Washington, and a modeling table on a short railroad track so French could view work in natural light. A converted barn serves as an exhibition gallery, and a caretaker's house and a smaller second studio stand south of the road. French created the Minute Man in Concord and the seated Lincoln for the Lincoln Memorial. The studio and gallery hold sketches, plaster casts and bronze models described as the most complete collection of his work. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark for its association with American sculpture.","period_of_significance":"1896-1931","architect_builder":"Henry Bacon (architect of studio and residence)","architectural_style":"Georgian Revival (residence)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked excellent with minor alterations; used as a museum open to the public, with the residence also checked as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 01:58:55.198049-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/47/7936/63793647/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/66000652_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000652/11a9d64aea-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000652/11a9d64aea-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chesterwood_(Stockbridge,_MA)_-_house.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chesterwood_(Stockbridge,_MA)_-_house.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793647","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesterwood_(Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5093884"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/daniel-chester-french-home-and-studio-chesterwood-66000652/"}
