It was built by John Budd in 1649 at Southold and moved to this site in 1659.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the most distinguished, if little known, surviving examples of English domestic architecture in America. Its construction details reflect the work of a master builder. Its three-part casement window frames on the north wall of the second floor are described as the finest of their type found in the country.","narrative":"Built by John Budd in 1649 at Southold, this two-story frame house was given to his daughter Anna as a wedding present in 1659 and moved about ten miles to its present site in Cutchogue for twenty pounds. It has a shingled gable roof and a large central brick chimney with a pilastered top. Each of its two main rooms has a fireplace nearly nine and a half feet wide. Fine construction details point to a master builder, and the three-part casement window frames on the north wall of the second floor are considered the finest of their type found in the country. The frames now installed are exact copies, with an original displayed inside. Later owners included the Wickham, Landon and Case families, and the house was confiscated in 1784 from the loyalist Parker Wickham. It was restored in 1940 and is now a house museum furnished with 17th and 18th century pieces.","period_of_significance":"1600-1699","architect_builder":"John Budd","architectural_style":"English domestic architecture (Colonial)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in very good condition and well maintained; it operates as a house museum open to visitors on weekends and daily in July and August.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.669656-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/66000573_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000573/8d0fe7b048-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000573/8d0fe7b048-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Photograph by Mike Peel (www.mikepeel.net).","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:At_Cutchogue,_New_York_2025_15.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photograph by Mike Peel (www.mikepeel.net).</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:At_Cutchogue,_New_York_2025_15.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316073","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_House_(Cutchogue)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7084246"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/old-house-the-66000573/"}
