The date is set in large brick numbers on the west wall. Inside, a central hall divides each floor into two rooms, and the south room has a Delft-tiled fireplace. Johannes DeWint owned the house when General George Washington stayed there four times during the closing years of the Revolution. His visit from September 28 to October 7, 1780, coincided with the trial and execution of Major John Andre, a British spy. In May 1783 Washington met Sir Guy Carleton here to discuss the British evacuation of New York City and prisoner exchanges.
