Arden grew from woodland he bought to protect from lumbering and became his permanent residence, finished shortly before his death in 1909.","narrative":"Arden is the country estate of railroad magnate Edward Henry Harriman in the Ramapo Mountains of Orange County, New York. Harriman began buying land there in 1885 and eventually held about 20,000 acres. In 1905 he had a granite ridge about 1,300 feet high blasted out as a house site. Arden House, a gray stone mansion in the style of a French chateau designed by Carrere and Hastings, was finished in the summer of 1909 using only American-made materials. Harriman died that September. His son W. Averell Harriman added a wing in 1923, and Columbia University added another in 1964 and later a classroom wing. The house has 98 rooms and now hosts business school seminars. Other surviving structures include a carriage shed, cable car stations and Tudor-style polo stables. The estate is recognized for its link to Harriman, who rebuilt and operated major railroads including the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, and large parts of the land were donated to the Palisades Park Commission.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 box marked; specific date 1909","architect_builder":"Carrere and Hastings","architectural_style":"French chateau","criteria":[],"status_note":"Arden House is owned by Columbia University and used by its business school for seminars; condition is marked excellent.
