It is also New York City's only surviving religious building from before the Revolution and the city's greatest architectural achievement before 1776. It served as a place of worship after George Washington's inauguration and hosted funeral services for Presidents Monroe and McKinley.","narrative":"St. Paul's Chapel is a stone church on Broadway in lower Manhattan, built for the parish of Trinity Church. Construction of the main body ran from 1764 to 1766, and the spire was added in 1794-96. Scottish architect Thomas McBean, a student of James Gibbs, modeled it closely on St. Martin's-in-the-Fields in London. It has rough-dressed local stone walls, brownstone window frames, sandstone quoins, and a portico of four giant fluted Ionic columns. Inside are a vaulted ceiling, Corinthian capitals, a wineglass pulpit, Waterford chandeliers ordered in 1802, and a chancel Glory designed by Major L'Enfant. The spire rises 220 feet. The chapel is considered one of the two finest Late Georgian churches in the country and the only surviving pre-Revolutionary religious building in New York City. It was used for worship after George Washington's inauguration and has been in continuous service since 1766, apart from a 1950 closure for restoration.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"Thomas McBean","architectural_style":"Late Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"In continuous service since 1766 except for a closure in 1950 for structural restoration; restored to its colonial appearance in 1950.
