The fort blocked the lake as an invasion route into Canada and served as a base for raids on English settlements. It was abandoned and destroyed by the French in 1759 and was never rebuilt.","narrative":"Fort St. Frederic occupies the Crown Point peninsula on Lake Champlain, where the lake narrows to roughly a quarter to half a mile. The French began building the stone fort in 1731 under the Sieur de la Fresniere. It was a pentagon-shaped starwork with bastions, ramparts about twenty feet high and thick, a stone-walled ditch and an octagonal slate watchtower. A small church, stone quarters and a fortified windmill lookout completed the works, and French farmers and traders settled along the nearby eastern shore. From this base the French blocked an invasion route into Canada and launched raids on English colonies. A British offensive in 1755 was turned back before reaching the fort. In 1759 the French garrison withdrew and blew up the magazine, and Amherst then built a larger fort nearby. Ruins of the fort were partly capped in masonry around 1910 and are now stabilized within a New York State park, alongside scattered remains of the French settlement.","period_of_significance":"1731-1759","architect_builder":"Sieur de la Fresniere (directed construction)","architectural_style":"Starwork fort (a pentagon with bastions at the angles)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Ruins partly capped with masonry around 1910 and stabilized by New York State; the fort site is maintained as a historic site within Crown Point Reservation, while nearby land is used as a camping and picnic ground.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.01553-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/66000517_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000517/ac7b78f975-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000517/ac7b78f975-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"petersent","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crown_Pt_NY_foreground_French_Fort_St_Frederic.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">petersent</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crown_Pt_NY_foreground_French_Fort_St_Frederic.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315752","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Saint-Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3078036"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/fort-st-frederic-66000517/"}
