Seward was a New York state senator and governor, a U.S. Senator, a founder of the Republican Party and Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869. Seward after his 1824 marriage to Miller's daughter Frances. Seward lived there for the rest of his life and enlarged it in 1847 with a tower, a rear wing, a porte-cochere and a carriage house, and again in 1870 with a southern extension and a second tower. The original block has a central hall plan, a round-arched doorway and a Palladian window. Inside, rooms such as the North Library, Parlor and Drawing Room retain furnishings of the Miller and Seward families. Seward served as New York governor, U.S. Senator and Secretary of State under Lincoln and Johnson, and is remembered for the purchase of Alaska from Russia. The property has been kept as a memorial and museum since 1951 and includes stone carriage houses and gardens on about 2.5 acres.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific dates 1824-1872, Seward's occupancy)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained as a memorial and historic house museum since 1951; condition listed as excellent in 1963; interior described as virtually unchanged since Seward's occupancy.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.757241-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/66000504_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000504/6c2b7774ce-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000504/6c2b7774ce-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Beyond My Ken","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_H._Seward_House_Auburn.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond My Ken</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_H._Seward_House_Auburn.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315661","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_H._Seward_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8010584"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/seward-william-h-house-66000504/"}
