Jackson. It is now a state-owned historic house museum and park.","why_significant":"The house was given to General Ulysses S. Grant by the citizens of Galena in 1865 after his Civil War victories. Grant and his family used it as a home base through his political career, presidency and world travels, until 1880. It is also a well-preserved example of Italianate bracketed architecture, restored from the original plans and specifications.","narrative":"Built in 1859-1860 on a ridge above the Galena River, this two-story brick house was designed by William Dennison for Alexander J. Jackson, a former city clerk. It has wide overhanging eaves on large wooden brackets, a low-pitched roof, stone lintels and sills, and a columned piazza with a balcony at the main entrance. In 1865 a committee of Galena citizens bought the furnished house and presented it to General Ulysses S. Grant on his return from the Civil War. The Grant family used it as a haven during his campaigns, presidency and long journeys, though he last stayed there in 1880. His son Frederick Dent Grant gave the house to the City of Galena in 1904, and the state received it in 1932. Using the original drawings and specifications, the state restored it in 1955-57 and added a small, non-historic restroom and exhibit building. The house operates as a museum and park.","period_of_significance":"1865-1885","architect_builder":"William Dennison, \"Engineer and Architect\"","architectural_style":"Italianate Bracketed","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the State of Illinois and maintained as a historic house museum and park; restored 1955-57; condition marked excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.972672-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/8916/28891606/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/66000322_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000322/f494fee74c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000322/f494fee74c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jesster79","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USGrantHomeGalena.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesster79</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USGrantHomeGalena.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"69000056","name":"Galena Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/illinois/galena-historic-district-69000056/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891606","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulysses_S._Grant_Home","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7880940"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/jo-daviess-county/grant-ulysses-s-house-66000322/"}
