Flood, designed by Augustus Laver. It is now the home of the Pacific Union Club.","why_significant":"It is the only one of the Nob Hill mansions to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire. It commemorates James Flood, one of the Comstock Bonanza Kings, and an era when great fortunes were made in speculation and mining. Its 1886 construction and the 1910 remodeling by Willis Polk mark two phases of its history.","narrative":"Built in 1886 on San Francisco's Nob Hill, this 42-room brownstone mansion was designed by Augustus Laver as the townhouse of James C. Flood, a Comstock mining magnate. Precut sandstone was brought from Connecticut and shipped around the Horn. A bronze fence around the property still stands on three sides. Flood had made his fortune with partners in the Consolidated Virginia Mine, whose 1873 bonanza became one of the richest finds of gold and silver ore. When the 1906 earthquake and fire swept the hill, the other mansions, built of wood, were destroyed. The Flood house lost its interior, but its stone shell survived. The Pacific Union Club bought it in 1909, and Willis Polk remodeled the interior and added semicircular wings and a third floor in 1910, using stone from the same Connecticut quarry. It is significant as the sole surviving Nob Hill palace and a reminder of the Comstock fortunes.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900-","architect_builder":"Augustus Laver, Willis Polk","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied by the Pacific Union Club, a private club; condition marked excellent and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.5678-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/66000230_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000230/ca1026285d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/66000230/ca1026285d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Flood_Mansion_(San_Francisco)_4.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_Flood_Mansion_(San_Francisco)_4.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858060","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_C._Flood_Mansion","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6130704"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-francisco/flood-james-c-mansion-66000230/"}
