It surrounds the central business district and runs south from the canal.","why_significant":"The district holds the village's best and most sophisticated examples of a broad range of American architectural styles, from Federal to Colonial Revival. Its fine craftsmanship reflects Pittsford's growth as a canal-side commercial center and later as a bedroom community for Rochester. Three churches and two schools are also significant.","narrative":"Pittsford's historic district gathers about 130 properties around the village's commercial core southeast of Rochester, New York. Most are wood-frame houses, along with three churches, two schools and many carriage houses and garages built between the 1810s and 1930s. Monroe Avenue, the old toll road to Rochester, holds the most distinguished dwellings, while Church Street has the highest concentration of early to mid-nineteenth century buildings, including a cobblestone schoolhouse. The styles range from Federal and Greek Revival through Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Eastlake to Colonial Revival and Bungalow. Brick buildings from the Federal period date to the prosperity that followed the routing of the Erie Canal. Later houses reflect the village's turn into a commuter suburb of Rochester. The central Four Corners area was left out because of extensive alterations. The district was recognized for the quality and variety of its architecture and for what it shows about two stages of local prosperity.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1810-ca. 1930","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Eastlake, Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked excellent and good, with some properties altered; the district is occupied, with private residences, religious, museum and government uses.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.878819-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002736.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/16000163/705ab557d5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/16000163/705ab557d5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pittsford_Town_Hall_Dec_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pittsford_Town_Hall_Dec_09.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84002736","name":"Pittsford Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/pittsford-village-historic-district-84002736/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318906","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsford_Village_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7199500"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/pittsford-village-historic-district-boundary-increase-16000163/"}
