The 1832 limestone block reflects the village's early settlement, and the Gothic addition of 1882 reflects the prosperity of the railroad and shipping era. Later changes in 1892 and 1914 completed its transformation within the period of significance.","narrative":"Built in 1832 from coursed, square-cut local limestone, this church on East Broadway in Cape Vincent began as a simple rectangular box with regular windows, corner quoins and splayed stone lintels. The congregation had met informally since 1823 in homes, shops and a schoolhouse before building began. After the railroad arrived in 1853 and the village prospered as a port, the church was enlarged in 1882 with a wood-framed Gothic narthex and corner tower, adding pointed arch openings, buttresses and an asymmetrical facade. Stained glass and a stenciled interior followed in 1892, and the interior was refurbished again in 1914. A 1959 concrete block fellowship hall at the rear is considered noncontributing. No architect or builder has been identified. The church is recognized for showing how a vernacular stone meetinghouse was reshaped to follow changing fashions in ecclesiastical architecture, and it is the fourth religious building listed under the town and village's multiple resource documentation.","period_of_significance":"1832-1914","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal; Late Victorian: Gothic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the 1959 rear hall is noncontributing and the tower's pinnacles and open belfry have been removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.47998-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/12001258.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12001258/b4ad8510b7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12001258/b4ad8510b7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Stephen Schweitzer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Pres_Cape_Vincent.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Schweitzer</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Pres_Cape_Vincent.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313136","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Society_of_Cape_Vincent","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q23091546"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/first-presbyterian-society-of-cape-vincent-12001258/"}
