Tubbs in a rare English Gothic castle-gatehouse form and operated as a Napa Valley winery through the nineteenth century. It later became Chateau Montelena, whose wine took part in the 1976 Judgment of Paris competition. The nomination identifies two periods of significance, the later one being 1968-1976.","narrative":"Built around 1888 on the north slope of Mount St. Helena, north of Calistoga, this two-story stone winery was designed to look like an English Gothic castle gatehouse. Its north front is ornamented with crenellated parapets, bartizans with faux arrow slits, narrow arched windows and a large semicircular entrance in the place of a portcullis. The bowed rear wall is set into the hillside, and the building was designed to be insulated by the earth around it. Alfred L. Tubbs's winery operated until Prohibition in 1920 and reopened as Chateau Montelena in 1940. It stopped making wine in 1949. In 1958 a new owner added Jade Lake, islands, bridges and Chinese pavilions. In 1968 new owners revived winemaking. The property is recognized for its distinctive architecture and for its role in Napa Valley wine history, including the 1976 Paris tasting that involved Chateau Montelena wine.","period_of_significance":"1968-1976 (second period; the first period's dates are not shown in the excerpt)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Gothic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used for wine processing and storage; a seismic rehabilitation was done in 2011, and the second floor holds a tasting room, offices and a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.720251-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/12001235.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12001235/a9bd2c11d0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12001235/a9bd2c11d0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Grendelkhan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chateau_Montelena_Winery.gk.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Grendelkhan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chateau_Montelena_Winery.gk.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860108","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chateau_Montelena","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q116766"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/napa-county/tubbs-alfred-l-winery-12001235/"}
