It is significant in architecture, education, ethnic heritage (Black) and social history. It served as the only school for African-American students in the county from 1959 until integration in 1970.","narrative":"Vienna High and Industrial School is a sprawling one-story campus on the east side of Vienna, Georgia, set in an African-American neighborhood between a railroad line and Georgia Route 27. Designed in 1955 by the Atlanta firm Stevens and Wilkinson and finished in 1959, it covers about 29,000 square feet with 23 classrooms, and is among the largest equalization schools in the state. Its flat roof, banks of metal-framed windows, brick veneer and lack of ornament reflect the International Style. Two interior courtyards brought light to the classrooms and doubled as outdoor classrooms. A cafeteria/auditorium and an industrial shop complete the campus. The school was built as part of Georgia's effort to keep racially separate school systems by providing modern black schools. It was the only school open to Black students in Dooly County until 1970, when the schools were integrated and it became Vienna High School. It later served as an elementary school until 2004, when it closed.","period_of_significance":"1959-1970","architect_builder":"Stevens and Wilkinson (architect)","architectural_style":"Modern Movement: International Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Closed and vacated in 2004; windows covered with sheet metal and plywood, interior courtyards overgrown, and the form lists current function as vacant/not in use.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:44.442702-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/12001056.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12001056/82a012266a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12001056/82a012266a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Michael Rivera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dooly_County_Board_of_Education_Annex,_Vienna_High_and_Industrial_School.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Rivera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dooly_County_Board_of_Education_Annex,_Vienna_High_and_Industrial_School.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207842","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_High_and_Industrial_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q117480249"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/dooly-county/vienna-high-and-industrial-school-12001056/"}
