It is also nominated under Criterion C for Architecture as a largely intact small-scale religious building with Picturesque character. It is one of few surviving buildings from the nineteenth-century hamlet of Cornwall Landing.","narrative":"Union Chapel is a small wood-frame building beside the Hudson River at Cornwall Landing, in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. Built around 1873 by the town's Orthodox Quakers, it measures roughly 18 by 22 feet and has a gable roof, board-and-batten siding, a pent-roofed front porch and two-over-two windows. Inside, exposed rafters and beaded wood boards replace plaster. The chapel served as a Quaker mission and Sunday school, sometimes non-denominational, in a waterfront neighborhood described in the 1860s as religiously destitute. Newspaper notices record prayer meetings, revival services and Sunday classes until about 1914, and some residents opposed the effort. Today the building is vacant and used for storage by a yacht club. It is valued as a largely intact example of modest religious architecture with Picturesque qualities, and as one of few surviving buildings from the old hamlet. It also reflects the Quaker presence in Cornwall's history.","period_of_significance":"c. 1873-c. 1914","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate; Other: Picturesque","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant/not in use; the building is described as abandoned and underutilized, used for storage by the adjacent yacht club, with evidence of fire damage to the ceiling.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.39249-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/12000958.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000958/ee5733ba10-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000958/ee5733ba10-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UNION_CHAPEL,_CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON,_ORANGE_COUNTY,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320776","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Chapel_(Cornwall-on-Hudson,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137196115"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/union-chapel-12000958/"}
