Murray, across from the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is significant locally under Criterion A for its role in the early 20th century urbanization of Sacramento, and under Criterion C as an excellent example of Mission Revival design. It also has unusually high integrity, including original built-in roll-out beds patented in 1907, an original cage elevator and original wood windows.","narrative":"Maydestone Apartments is a four-story, 24-unit apartment building at 15th and J Streets in Sacramento, completed in 1910 by local brick contractor George W. Murray. Its wood frame is covered in stucco on the north and west street faces, with horizontal wood siding on the south and east. Mission Revival features include arched bell-style parapets, timber brackets, angled bays, tile visor roofs and a classically detailed entrance with Tuscan columns and a mosaic tile landing. Inside, the original floor plans, hardwood floors, wood sash windows, built-in cabinets, pull-out beds and a cage elevator survive. A 2010-2011 rehabilitation followed federal preservation standards. The building was found significant locally for two reasons. It represents the growth of downtown Sacramento from town to city, when workers needed affordable apartments near jobs and services. It is also regarded as one of the best Mission Revival buildings in the city, with an unusually intact exterior and interior.","period_of_significance":"1910","architect_builder":"Murray, George (builder)","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in 2010-2011 under the Secretary of the Interior's Standards; still used as multiple-unit housing, with the roll-out beds in use by tenants.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.775932-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/12000812.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000812/22c47ab4ae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000812/22c47ab4ae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"AmandaLaQueso","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Maydestone_Apartments,_building_exterior.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">AmandaLaQueso</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Maydestone_Apartments,_building_exterior.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860630","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maydestone_Apartments","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q126178528"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/sacramento-county/maydestone-apartments-12000812/"}
