The builder is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the most significant surviving Greek Revival church in rural Halifax County. Its interior changes (reversed chancel, removal of the slave partition, 1889 apse) reflect shifting Methodist Protestant preaching preferences. It is also tied to Rev. William Henry Wills (1809-1889), a leader in the denomination in North Carolina.","narrative":"Bethesda Methodist Protestant Church sits on one wooded acre at the eastern edge of Brinkleyville in Halifax County, North Carolina. Built in 1853, the gable-front frame building measures about thirty by forty feet and shows Greek Revival features such as a pedimented gable, paired entrances and boxed cornices. Inside, the plan was altered after the Civil War: the chancel orientation was reversed, the slave partition was removed, and an 1889 polygonal apse was added. Original heart pine floors, plaster walls, sawn-end pews, a turned chancel balustrade and 1927 stained glass survive. A cemetery with sixty-eight burials lies behind the church. The property was recognized for its architecture, described as the best rural Greek Revival church in the county, and for its link to Rev. William Henry Wills, a prominent Methodist Protestant minister and conference leader who helped found two local schools in the 1850s. The church is currently vacant.","period_of_significance":"1853 - 1889","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant / not in use; the cemetery remains in use as a cemetery function.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.308813-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/7207/47720706/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/12000576.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720706","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethesda_Methodist_Protestant_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18705840"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/halifax-county/bethesda-methodist-protestant-church-12000576/"}
