Its thick, uncoursed local fieldstone walls define its character, and the stone was gathered by the Allen Jay community after the state required masonry instead of wood frame construction. It retains good integrity of location, setting, design, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Built in 1938-1939 on the Allen Jay School campus in southeastern High Point, this two-story gymnasium measures about 122 by 70 feet and is defined by its fieldstone walls, nearly a foot and a half thick. The stones are uncoursed and set in light-gray mortar, with a mix of dark gray and reddish-brown rock. Inside, a maple-floored gym occupies most of the building, while the west end holds an entrance hall, classrooms, a balcony and a partial basement housing the boiler. The Work Projects Administration built it with county cooperation, as a bronze plaque records. The original plan was for a wood-framed building, but the state required masonry, so students, staff and neighbors collected local rocks for the walls. The project also needed a meeting with President Roosevelt to move its approval forward. Its rustic character links it to other WPA school buildings of the Depression. The school vacated it in 2007, and it is the only building on the campus included in the listing.","period_of_significance":"1939","architect_builder":"Works Progress Administration","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements: Rustic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Vacated in 2007; current function listed as vacant/not in use.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.153408-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/7205/47720516/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/12000574.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000574/523872f61b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000574/523872f61b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"336photog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rock_Gym.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">336photog</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rock_Gym.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720516","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Jay_School_Rock_Gymnasium","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18739434"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/guilford-county/jay-allen-school-rock-gymnasium-12000574/"}
