Bailey and moved to its present spot on the same lot in 1926.","why_significant":"The house is considered a well-preserved local example of Queen Anne architecture with Eastlake detailing, one of the few such homes remaining from those that once lined Jackson, Randolph and Lafayette streets. It retains features such as roof cresting, spindlework, patterned masonry chimneys and an Eastlake staircase. It is recognized under Criterion C for architecture at the local level.","narrative":"Built in 1887 for Macomb banker and merchant William S. Bailey, this two-and-one-half story house near the Macomb Square shows the Queen Anne style with Eastlake influences. Its wood frame is clad in clapboard over a brick and stone foundation, with steep gable roofs, metal roof cresting, spindlework porches and three patterned brick chimneys. In 1926 part of the lot was sold to Standard Oil, and the house was lifted, turned ninety degrees and moved about 60 feet south by teams of horses, reusing its original foundation stones. A preservation society received the house as a gift in 1982 and restored it with volunteer labor and private funds. Today the first floor serves as a meeting space, the second floor holds offices, and the third floor is a caretaker's apartment. The house was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of a style once common along nearby streets, and it retains good integrity despite the move.","period_of_significance":"1887","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne; Late Victorian/Eastlake","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"In use as a community meeting facility on the first floor, with offices on the second floor and a caretaker's apartment on the third; restored after being donated to a preservation society in 1982.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.440254-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/8936/28893616/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/12000553.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000553/c213ed2251-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000553/c213ed2251-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_S._Bailey_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_S._Bailey_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"13000295","name":"Macomb Courthouse Square historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/illinois/macomb-courthouse-square-historic-district-13000295/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893616","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_S._Bailey_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24061416"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/mcdonough-county/bailey-william-s-house-12000553/"}
