It has six contributing resources: a brick Gothic Revival church (1871-72), a rectory, a school and convent (1909-10), and a shrine (1959).","why_significant":"The nomination argues the parish was the center of Syracuse's Irish Roman Catholic community and the first Syracuse parish created for that group. It later spawned three other parishes. The complex met the spiritual, educational and social needs of parishioners and grew to include a school, convent, rectory and devotional shrine.","narrative":"St. Patrick's Church Complex occupies the corner of Schuyler Street and North Lowell Avenue in Syracuse's Tipperary Hill neighborhood, an early enclave of Irish immigrants. The parish built six resources between 1871 and 1959: a red brick Gothic Revival church with uneven towers and a stained glass rose window, a rectory, a yellow brick school and convent from 1909-1910, a 1930s school addition, and a Marian shrine in a contemplative garden. The church survived a 1966 fire that damaged the interior and was restored within two years. The complex is significant as the center of Syracuse's Irish Roman Catholic community. St. Patrick's was the first city parish created for this group and later gave rise to St. Cecilia, St. Brigit and St. Charles parishes. It offered religious education, schooling, charitable aid, and social organizations, and its priest Rev. James P. Magee served over fifty years and influenced Geddes's 1886 annexation to the city.","period_of_significance":"1871-1960","architect_builder":"Charles C Nichols (church), James A Randall (school & convent)","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Revivals (Gothic Revival church)","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Parish established in 1871 and still active; the church, school and rectory remain in religious use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.403133-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/12000480.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000480/2ec45a4b6e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000480/2ec45a4b6e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"St. Patrick's Church","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St-patricks_1890_syracuse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Patrick's Church</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St-patricks_1890_syracuse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320453","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Patrick%27s_Church_(Syracuse,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q23092095"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/st-patricks-church-complex-12000480/"}
