Caleb Hammond designed it and S.B. Simmons built it in 1875; it was expanded in 1921 and 1924.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a well-preserved artifact of Acushnet's early history as an independent town (Criterion A). It also calls it a fine example of a 19th-century Italianate public building by regional architect Caleb Hammond (Criterion C). It is one of three surviving public school buildings from the town's early history and retains a high level of integrity.","narrative":"Long Plain School, at 1203 Main Street in the northern village of Long Plain in Acushnet, Massachusetts, is a two-story wood-frame schoolhouse in the Italianate style. New Bedford architect Caleb Hammond designed it, and S.B. Simmons of Taunton built it in 1875 for about $3,160 to serve as a combined primary and grammar school. It has a hipped roof, a bracketed cornice, a pedimented front projection and a cupola with a bronze bell. Brown and Poole of New Bedford designed a rear sanitation building in 1921 and a 1924 expansion that widened the main block, giving four classrooms. The school closed briefly from 1947 to 1950 and permanently in 1972. Its significance rests on its role in the early history of Acushnet as an independent town, which incorporated in 1860, and on its architecture as a well-preserved example of Hammond's work. Since 1975 the Acushnet Historical Society has run it as the Long Plain Museum, with classroom and history exhibits.","period_of_significance":"1875-1962","architect_builder":"Caleb Hammond, architect of original 1875 building; S.B.
