It is among the first, and possibly the first, Ranch House in Milledgeville. Its uncoursed pink granite walls are unusual, and it has a rare period bomb shelter in the basement.","narrative":"Completed in 1951, this one-story granite house sits at 290 Lakeside Drive in Carrington Woods, a subdivision laid out in 1947 north of downtown Milledgeville. Dr. Charles Zattau, a dentist who had served in the armed forces, and his wife Louise were the fourth family to buy lots there and built a Ranch House overlooking a lake. It has a low-pitched hip roof, a picture window in the living room, and a zoned plan with living and dining rooms at the front, kitchen and den at the back, and bedrooms at the west end. Its uncoursed pink granite walls are found in only one other Milledgeville house. The basement holds a one-car garage and a reinforced granite-and-concrete bomb shelter. The architect is not known. The house is considered among the first Ranch Houses in Milledgeville, and it illustrates the postwar suburban pattern common in Georgia. The lot keeps its 1951 concrete drive and mature plantings. The listing includes the house and its landscape.","period_of_significance":"1951","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Ranch House (Bungalow Ranch subtype)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; the form lists current function as domestic single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.4566-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/12000381.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000381/0c1035f2b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000381/0c1035f2b4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Charles_and_Louise_Zattau_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Charles_and_Louise_Zattau_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206883","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134079274"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/baldwin-county/zattau-dr-charles-and-louise-house-12000381/"}
