It is also known as the Old Stone Church.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a noteworthy early twentieth century example of Norman-inspired Romanesque Revival church architecture in Westchester County. It also has historical ties to the Heins and LaFarge families, as a memorial to architect George Heins and artist John LaFarge. The exterior retains most of its historic character despite interior losses.","narrative":"Built in 1911-12 on East Main Street in Mohegan Lake, this stone church was designed by the New York firm of Hewitt & Bottomley in a Norman-inspired Romanesque Revival style. It has a modified Latin-cross plan, an offset bell tower, a five-sided apse and a frame sacristy. Rough-hewn rubble walls vary from cream to dark grey, set off by smoother stone dressings, round-arched openings and a lavender slate roof. Aimee LaFarge Heins financed the church as a memorial to her husband, architect George Heins, and her brother, artist John LaFarge. Windows by LaFarge and pews believed imported from France were later removed, and the windows now reside in a church in Shrub Oak. The building has since been converted to a wine bar, with historic features such as the open-truss ceiling, mosaic medallion and tower vestibule floor kept. It was listed for its architecture at the local level.","period_of_significance":"c. 1911-12","architect_builder":"Hewitt & Bottomley, architects","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Romanesque Revival/Norman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Former church, renovated for use as a wine bar (restaurant); original furnishings and LaFarge windows removed, bell and belfry removed at closing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.522226-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/12000262.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000262/58c9259798-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000262/58c9259798-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jsunwall","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20160927_St_George%27s_Church_(The_Winery)_Mohegan_Lake_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jsunwall</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20160927_St_George%27s_Church_(The_Winery)_Mohegan_Lake_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323229","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137317094"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/st-georges-church-12000262/"}
