Atwood and Howard Raymond Weeks. It is one of the few public buildings in Lumberton built in the Colonial Revival style. It retains a high degree of integrity in its form, layout and materials.","narrative":"Completed in 1937 at the corner of Elm and Eighth Streets in Lumberton, this two-story brick building on a raised basement was built by the Works Progress Administration for Robeson County. Atwood and Weeks, a Durham-based firm, designed it in the Colonial Revival style, with a symmetrical seven-bay facade, a low hipped roof, round-arched windows with tracery and keystones, and a pilastered central entrance. County commissioners chose the one-acre lot, bought at auction in 1929, over a city-owned site in 1936. The project cost an estimated $32,289 and employed about fifty men from relief rolls. It first housed the county agriculture department and later hosted school, extension, health and social service offices. The interior keeps its T-shaped plan, central stair, paneled doors with transoms and cast-iron radiators. Its significance rests on its architecture, its relatively unaltered condition and its rarity as a Colonial Revival public building in the town.","period_of_significance":"1937","architect_builder":"Weeks, Howard Raymond, architect; Atwood, Thomas C., architect/engineer","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently in use as a county government office building; the basement is used mainly for storage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.890154-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/34/7219/47721934/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/12000216.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000216/9987f6d7c7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000216/9987f6d7c7-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Ammodramus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robeson_County_Ag_Bldg_center_from_S_1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Ammodramus</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robeson_County_Ag_Bldg_center_from_S_1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721934","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robeson_County_Agricultural_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19817705"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/robeson-county/robeson-county-agricultural-building-12000216/"}
