It served rail passengers, salesmen, miners and later Shasta Dam workers. It is the last remaining turn-of-the-20th-century hotel and the only four-story building left from Redding's early development.","narrative":"Rising four stories above the corner of Yuba and California Streets in downtown Redding, the Lorenz Hotel was built in 1901-1902 across from the railroad. Designed by Arnold & Barrett of Redding, the brick building has a U-shaped plan, a flat roof with parapet, brick quoins, stringcourses, and a recessed entry beneath a broken pediment dated 1901. Originally it held 132 rooms; a rebuilding after a 1937 fire cut that number by adding private baths. It housed rail passengers, traveling salesmen, miners and mining-company staff, and later workers building Shasta Dam. Hotel service ended in the mid-1970s, and the building now holds apartments, a restaurant and other commercial space. It is the last turn-of-the-century hotel and the only brick hotel left in downtown Redding, and it keeps a high degree of exterior integrity despite interior changes. These qualities underpin its local significance in the city's commercial history from 1902 to 1945.","period_of_significance":"1902-1945","architect_builder":"Arnold & Barrett, Architects (Redding); builder unknown","architectural_style":"Beaux Arts / Italian Renaissance","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Hotel use ended in the mid-1970s, after the hotel closed in 1973 and was rehabilitated as housing. It currently has multiple dwelling units, a restaurant and commercial storefronts, and a church leasing the basement space.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.546965-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/12000129.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000129/15c8a6dc1e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000129/15c8a6dc1e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jonmallard","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReddingLorenzHotel_01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jonmallard</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ReddingLorenzHotel_01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861931","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q113342721"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/shasta-county/lorenz-hotel-12000129/"}
