Cherry Street in Albion, Edwards County, Illinois, built in 1842 and extensively remodeled in 1890-91, on a lot donated by town founder George Flower.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is a good local example of Gothic Revival architecture, specifically a simplified 'Prairie' Gothic version of English parish church design common in rural Episcopal churches. It retains original features such as pointed-arch nave windows with tracery, locally fired brick and an open timber ceiling. It is the only nineteenth-century Gothic Revival building in Albion.","narrative":"Set on a hilltop one block from Albion's town square, this small brick church was built in 1842 on a lot donated by town founder George Flower. Its walls are laid with locally fired brick over a sandstone foundation, and its main block is a simple rectangle with a chancel and a small sacristy. Under the guidance of its rector, Benjamin Hutchins, the building was extensively remodeled in 1890-91. A new roof and floor were installed, the timber-trussed ceiling was opened, the gallery was removed, and a brick arch created a deeper chancel. A bell tower with the entrance at its base was added at the southwest corner. Large lancet-arched nave windows, walnut entry doors, wainscoting and open trusses survive. The church is recognized as a plain, rural-style Gothic Revival design influenced by English parish churches, and as the only nineteenth-century example of that style in Albion. A parish hall was added in 1985, and the chancel windows received stained glass in 1999.","period_of_significance":"1842-1891","architect_builder":"Not known","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a church; a modern parish hall was added in the 1980s and a non-contributing metal storage shed stands in the west yard.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.126569-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/27/8928/28892827/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/12000027.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000027/743bca7b0e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/12000027/743bca7b0e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._John%27s_Episcopal_Church_in_Albion.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._John%27s_Episcopal_Church_in_Albion.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892827","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Albion,_Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16900579"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/edwards-county/st-johns-episcopal-church-12000027/"}
