It is also significant under Criterion C as a late nineteenth century Second Empire building that retains its Mansard roof, cornices and upper-floor windows despite the 1946 removal of its storefronts.","narrative":"Standing at the point where Summit Avenue meets Sea Cliff Avenue, this three-story wood-framed building in Sea Cliff, New York, dates to about 1880. It combines a ground-floor store with upper-floor living space under a slate-clad Mansard roof with gabled dormers and scrolled cornice brackets. German immigrant Louis Christ opened a bakery here, and the building later housed a general store, a telegraph office, a hardware store, a bus company office and, from 1950 to 1980, Harian's General Store. The upper floors served as a boarding house until they were converted to two apartments in 1956. A rear addition with an arched brick bake oven, believed to be unique on Long Island at the time, was removed in 1958. The building is listed as one of the few surviving commercial structures from Sea Cliff's summer resort era and as a Second Empire example that keeps its Mansard roof, original upper windows, cornices and shingle siding.","period_of_significance":"1880-1958","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Second Empire","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Ground floor holds a store and the upper floors hold two rental apartments; the rear addition and bake ovens were removed in 1958 and the storefronts were altered in 1946.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.853606-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/11001002.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11001002/cc58d90597-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11001002/cc58d90597-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ken Spencer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:357-359_Sea_Cliff_Avenue_sm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ken Spencer</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:357-359_Sea_Cliff_Avenue_sm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319077","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_Building_(Sea_Cliff,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q23091463"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/christ-building-11001002/"}
