It is also a highly intact example of Second Empire residential architecture, with its Mansard roof, dormers and wrap-around porch.","narrative":"Built in 1886 on Maple Avenue in Elmira, this three-story house with a prominent Mansard roof, dormers and a wrap-around porch is a well-preserved example of Second Empire design. It was built for Alexander Eustace, a lawyer and Democratic politician who served as Chemung County clerk and later chaired the New York State Civil Service Commission. He left that post in 1893 after a public clash with Governor Roswell P. Flower over civil service rules, then returned to Elmira to practice law. The house sits beside two other large homes from the same neighborhood, built for John Brand Sr. and Jr. A two-story addition was made in the 1930s, and in the 1940s the building was divided into six apartments that follow the original room layout. Original fireplaces, moldings, doors, plaster walls, wood floors and a curving staircase survive. The architect or builder is not known. The property is considered the only documented extant building directly linked to Eustace.","period_of_significance":"1886-1913","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Second Empire","criteria":["B"],"status_note":"Divided into six rental apartments in the 1940s and still used as apartments; the interior retains original plaster, floors, woodwork, mantels and the main staircase.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.045508-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/11000996.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000996/e479975bad-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000996/e479975bad-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alexander_Eustace_House,_Elmira_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alexander_Eustace_House,_Elmira_NY.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"13000599","name":"Maple Avenue Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/maple-avenue-historic-district-13000599/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316814","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Eustace_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4718812"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chemung-county/eustace-alexander-house-11000996/"}
