It has five contributing buildings, one contributing site (the athletic field) and three noncontributing buildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the campus is a prominent, cohesive and intact collection of PWA Moderne school buildings constructed after the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake, designed mainly by Marsh, Smith and Powell with New Deal funding. It is also significant in the area of education. The Science Building received an AIA Southern California Chapter Honor Award in 1939.","narrative":"Hollywood High School occupies about fourteen acres in the middle of Hollywood, bounded by Orange Drive, Highland Avenue, Hawthorn Avenue and Sunset Boulevard. The school was established on the site in 1904. After the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake, nearly every building except the Library and Auditorium had to be demolished and replaced. The new buildings, mostly designed by the local firm Marsh, Smith and Powell in the PWA Moderne style, were funded largely by New Deal relief programs. They include the Science, Liberal Arts and Arts Buildings, completed between 1935 and 1938, and give the campus a consistent look. The Library was remodeled in 1935 and holds a 1934 mural by Haldane Douglas. The Auditorium, built in 1924, was modernized by Marston & Weston in 1956. The campus is recognized for its education role and for its intact group of Depression-era school architecture. Later additions, including a 1968 gymnasium, do not detract from the historic setting.","period_of_significance":"1910 - 1956","architect_builder":"Marsh, Smith and Powell (Herbert Powell designed the Liberal Arts Building); Marston & Weston (Auditorium remodel, 1956)","architectural_style":"Modern Movement: Moderne (PWA Moderne); Mid-Century Modern (Auditorium)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a school; the campus retains a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.547747-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/11000989.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000989/122f56235c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000989/122f56235c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Galen Smith from Minneapolis, MN, USA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HollywoodHighSchool.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Galen Smith from Minneapolis, MN, USA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HollywoodHighSchool.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859204","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_High_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5882770"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/hollywood-high-school-historic-district-11000989/"}
