It is cited under Criterion C as an excellent local example of Beaux Arts design and the final work of architect Allen D. Fellows.","narrative":"Located at 948 Lincoln Way in Auburn's Central Square business district, this two-story brick building houses a Masonic meeting hall above ground-floor shops. It began around 1905 as a one-story block of department stores. The Masonic lodge bought the stores in 1913, and local architect Allen D. Fellows redesigned them in 1914 with a second story and a terra cotta Beaux Arts facade made by Gladding, McBean of Lincoln. Five arched upper windows are separated by paired Corinthian pilasters, and a stairway entrance is marked MASONIC TEMPLE. The lodge, organized in 1851, moved here as business shifted east toward the railroad. Later tenants included J.C. Penney and Pacific Bell, and a mid-1950s ground-floor remodel added terra cotta bricks ahead of the 1960 Winter Olympics. The building is significant for its role in Auburn's community organizations and commerce, and as Fellows's final and most notable work. Its upper floors and facade remain largely original.","period_of_significance":"1914-60","architect_builder":"Fellows, Allen D., architect","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals-Beaux Arts; Beaux Arts Classicism","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as well maintained and in excellent condition; the upper floor is still used as a meeting hall and the ground floor as commercial space.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.524999-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/11000939.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000939/e1b4e02c69-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000939/e1b4e02c69-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"liannadavis","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Auburn_Masonic_Temple_2012-09-16_16-59-44.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">liannadavis</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Auburn_Masonic_Temple_2012-09-16_16-59-44.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857718","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auburn_Masonic_Temple_(Auburn,_California)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4819282"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/placer-county/auburn-masonic-temple-11000939/"}
