It was Auburn's first firehouse. Despite its 1973 move, it retains its architectural integrity.","narrative":"Auburn Fire House No. 1 is a two-story wooden firehouse completed in February 1888 and now standing at El Dorado Street/Highway 49 and Lincoln Way. Its front-gabled roof, bargeboard, patterned shingles, cutaway bay windows with balconies, and red-and-white paint combine Stick and Queen Anne details. The town's volunteer Hose Company No. 1 and Frederick Birdsall, who owned the Bear River and Auburn Water and Mining Company, jointly built it. The fire company used the ground floor for its apparatus, and the water company's office occupied the upper floor. Members John Davis and Frank Hoffman directed construction. It was the first firehouse in Auburn and served until the 1930s, and the fire department used it into the 1950s. In 1973 it was moved about 100 feet to make room for a savings and loan headquarters. Because it kept its design, materials and workmanship, it was listed for architecture. The exterior is in excellent condition, and the building is vacant.","period_of_significance":"1888","architect_builder":"Davis, John and Hoffman, Frank--Builders","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/ Stick and Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The building is vacant, its exterior is in excellent condition, and static displays are planned for the interior.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.706658-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/11000936.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000936/4027f7dc9a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000936/4027f7dc9a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"liannadavis","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Auburn_Fire_House_No-_1_2012-09-16_16-18-57.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">liannadavis</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Auburn_Fire_House_No-_1_2012-09-16_16-18-57.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857712","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auburn_Fire_House_No._1","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60748057"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/placer-county/auburn-fire-house-no-1-11000936/"}
