Contributing buildings date from 1880 to 1964.","why_significant":"The district shows how Toccoa grew around the railroad, which arrived in 1873, into a wholesale, manufacturing and shipping center. It keeps its historic grid layout, a concentration of one- and two-story brick commercial buildings, and civic landmarks such as the courthouse, post office and depot.","narrative":"Downtown Toccoa, in northeast Georgia's Stephens County, is a compact commercial and civic district laid out on a grid along a ridge. The town was platted after land purchases in 1871-1872, with lots offered for sale in 1873, and the arrival of the Atlanta & Richmond Air-Line Railroad that year turned it into a wholesale, cotton-processing and shipping center. The district holds 77 contributing resources built between 1880 and 1964. Most are one- and two-story attached brick storefronts, concentrated along Doyle Street. Civic landmarks include the 1908 county courthouse on the town's highest ground, the 1932 former post office now serving as city hall, the 1925 First Presbyterian Church, and the restored circa 1915 railroad depot. A few houses, such as the 1903 Queen Anne James B. Simmons House, and a 1949 steel stringer bridge on Pond Street also contribute. Urban renewal in the early 1970s removed some buildings for parking.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"H. L.
