It contains 89 contributing resources dating from about 1760 to the early twentieth century.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Forestville is one of the best-developed and best-preserved nineteenth-century mill villages in the northern Shenandoah Valley. It reflects settlement by German families, the growth of gristmilling, agriculture and commerce, and vernacular building traditions using local log, timber and limestone. Its street and lot pattern has changed little since the late nineteenth century.","narrative":"Forestville is a crossroads mill village on Holman's Creek in southern Shenandoah County, Virginia. Its core grew around a gristmill built about 1760 for Andrew Zirkle, and village lots were first formally subdivided in 1838. Most buildings are log or wood-frame houses, typically two-story I-houses on limestone foundations, reflecting the building traditions of German settlers. The district also holds a church built in 1873, a post office, two doctors' offices, a 1918 Craftsman-style school, a cemetery, barns and smokehouses. One brick house from about 1850 is the only Greek Revival building. Many structures have gained vinyl siding or new windows, and 1940s road widening removed a few buildings at the main intersection. Even so, the lot pattern closely matches an 1885 map, and surrounding farmland still frames the village. It was recognized for its role in settlement, industry, agriculture and commerce, and for its largely intact vernacular architecture.","period_of_significance":"ca.1760-1945","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular, with Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Craftsman elements","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Buildings are described as in fair-to-good condition. Many have vinyl siding, roofing or windows, and the Zirkle Mill has been restored. The cemetery, church, stores and dwellings remain in use.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.115605-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/6836/41683637/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/11000874.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000874/0efd15fb19-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000874/0efd15fb19-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Kevin M.
