It has 73 contributing and 123 noncontributing resources.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the district is a rare surviving Northern Neck village whose economy rested on a steamship wharf, oyster and crab harvesting, fishing and seafood processing. Its modest, unornamented buildings reflect the practical needs of the watermen who lived and worked there. It is significant under Criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Morattico is a small watermen's village on a peninsula along the Rappahannock River in Lancaster County, Virginia. The land was once home to the Moraughtacund people and later part of Morattico Plantation. After the plantation's owner lost his finances, brothers John S. and John H. Whealton bought 480 acres in 1889 and founded the village, first called Whealton. It received a post office in 1892 and took back the name Morattico in 1911. Its earliest surviving buildings date to the 1890s and include two-story wood-frame houses with restrained Victorian detail and a general store, now a museum. Later resources include small offices, concrete block crab houses, a church and mid-century dwellings. The district is listed for its connection to steamship transport, oystering, crabbing and seafood processing between 1890 and 1960, and for plain buildings shaped by the needs of the working waterfront. Newer houses and sheds make up most of the noncontributing resources.","period_of_significance":"1890-1960","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular (Folk Victorian); Modern (minimal traditional); Cape Cod; Modern (contemporary)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Most buildings are single-family dwellings, many rehabilitated for part-time residents. The general store closed in 2003 and is now a waterfront museum. A crab house and a church remain in use, and a seafood plant was demolished around 2005.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.655212-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/74/6814/41681474/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/11000857.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000857/afbdb3f235-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000857/afbdb3f235-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Eric Fischer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office,_Morattico,_VA_(5098961452).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Eric Fischer</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office,_Morattico,_VA_(5098961452).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100005837","name":"Occupacia-Rappahannock Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/occupacia-rappahannock-rural-historic-district-100005837/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681474","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Village_of_Morattico_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16902721"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/lancaster-county/village-of-morattico-historic-district-11000857/"}
