Lakeview Avenue in the Lincoln Park community area of Chicago, built 1926-1927 as a 107-unit semi-cooperative, designed by Rissman & Hirschfeld.","why_significant":"It is significant under Criterion C for architecture as a distinctive, well-crafted 1920s upscale cooperative elevator apartment building. Its irregular C-shaped plan was shaped by interior cluster plans that maximize light, air and lake views. It is also noteworthy as a semi-cooperative in which larger units were sold and smaller units rented. It retains much of its original integrity inside and out.","narrative":"Rising 19 stories beside Lincoln Park, 2440 N. Lakeview Avenue was built in 1926-1927 as a 107-unit semi-cooperative apartment building. Larger units were sold to owner-occupants, while smaller ones were rented to help offset ownership costs. Chicago architects Rissman & Hirschfeld designed it in the Tudor Revival style, using red brick and white terra cotta, flattened Tudor arches, trefoils and a balustrade above the sixteenth floor. Its C-shaped plan embraces a private garden and uses projecting bays to bring light, cross-ventilation and lake views to each apartment. Separate entrances and elevators served owners and tenants, and each elevator lobby serves just two units. Interiors feature groin-vaulted galleries, wood-burning fireplaces and paneled lobbies with stone mantels. The building was recognized for architecture as a well-preserved example of the luxury cooperative apartment type that took shape along Chicago's lakefront in the 1920s. Its two main facades are unchanged, and it remains a residence today.","period_of_significance":"1926-1927","architect_builder":"Rissman & Hirschfeld","architectural_style":"Late 19th and early 20th century revivals: Tudor Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as multiple dwellings; 95 units today after some units were combined, and it has been 100% cooperative since 1950.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.1389-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/8921/28892137/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/11000847.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000847/ba290de17f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000847/ba290de17f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Alanscottwalker","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2440_N_Lakeview.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Alanscottwalker</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2440_N_Lakeview.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892137","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_at_2440_N._Lakeview_Avenue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85749445"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/building-at-2440-n-lakeview-avenue-11000847/"}
