It shows asymmetrical massing, decorative texturing and moulded surrounds, with Eastlake-influenced detailing in the front gable. The house retains good interior and exterior integrity and sits in its original turnpike setting.","narrative":"This house at 485 East Main Street in West Winfield was built in 1888 for David Bonfoy, his wife Helen and his daughter Roxanna. It is a two-and-a-half-story frame house with clapboard siding, a standing seam metal roof and a raised stone foundation. A rear block, added at the same time, received a second story in the 1940s to create a separate apartment. The front gable carries Eastlake-style ornament, including a spindle frieze, carved volutes and a window with multi-colored lights. Inside, the house keeps its plaster walls, moulded trim, paneled doors and a decorative stair. A carriage barn behind the house is now a garage. Marye and Gerald Barstow owned the property from 1926 to 1979, and locals still call it the Barstow House. It was listed as a modest, vernacular example of late Victorian middle-class building on the old Cherry Valley Turnpike, which is now US Route 20, with good integrity.","period_of_significance":"1889-c1940","architect_builder":"Unknown (likely a local builder)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian (some Eastlake-style detailing)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling, with a separate upstairs apartment added in the 1940s; the carriage barn has been converted to a two-car garage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.501938-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/11000595.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000595/f90aa6678a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000595/f90aa6678a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bonfoy%E2%80%93Barstow_House_Oct_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bonfoy%E2%80%93Barstow_House_Oct_09.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100012672","name":"West Winfield Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/west-winfield-historic-district-100012672/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318110","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonfoy%E2%80%93Barstow_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3311210"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/bonfoy-barstow-house-11000595/"}
