It stood between the Federal and Confederate lines and still bears physical scars from the fighting. It is described as the only surviving building that retains such scars.","narrative":"Built around 1855 on an 80-acre farm owned by John and Mary Haugh, this two-story log I-house sits at the center of the Cross Keys Battlefield in southern Rockingham County. Its hewn, dovetail-notched logs are covered with weatherboard, and the interior shows careful craftsmanship, including beaded boards, chamfered moldings and decorative scrollwork on the stair. On June 8, 1862, the house lay between Federal and Confederate lines during the Battle of Cross Keys. Shells and bullets struck it, and at least one shell set the attic on fire. Its stone chimneys were later removed, probably because of the damage. Bullet holes, charring, crushed boards and a displaced basement wall remain as evidence. Charles Diehl added a rear ell and a wrap-around porch about 1915. A wagon barn, a modern barn and a stone wall on the 1.7-acre property are non-contributing. The house is considered the only surviving building that retains physical scars from the battle.","period_of_significance":"June 8, 1862","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Vernacular Greek Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; the log portion remains largely intact and in good condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.030102-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/6835/41683517/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/11000552.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000552/4df9268c81-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000552/4df9268c81-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Haugh_House_from_Port_Republic_Road.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Haugh_House_from_Port_Republic_Road.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683517","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haugh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16892149"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/rockingham-county/haugh-house-11000552/"}
