Architect Charles E. Firestone designed it as his own residence.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C as the only modern, Wrightian-style residence designed by Canton architect Charles E. Firestone. It reflects the final phase of his more than fifty years of practice in Canton and northern Ohio. Firestone designed over 180 buildings and was cited as the leading architect of the Canton area from 1915 to 1959.","narrative":"Set on 1.4 wooded acres near Hills and Dales village in Canton, Ohio, this single-story, 2,200-square-foot house was built in 1959 as the personal home of architect Charles E. Firestone. Its design shows the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright, fitting the house into hilly terrain and combining steel, concrete and glass with brick and redwood siding. Inside are an open great room with a large central fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows, cherry paneling and terrazzo floors. Firestone practiced architecture for more than fifty years and designed over 180 buildings across Canton and northern Ohio, including schools, churches, factories and commercial buildings. He became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1947. This residence was his only modern-style house and probably his last design. It is recognized for its architecture and as the work of a local master, and it remains in excellent condition with only minor alterations.","period_of_significance":"1959-1967","architect_builder":"Firestone, Charles Essig","architectural_style":"Modern Movements/Wrightian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition with only minor modifications, including a 1986 solarium and a 1995 foam roof coating; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.426045-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/11000369.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991380","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138680126"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/stark-county/firestone-charles-e-house-11000369/"}
