It retains integrity of construction, form, materials and detailing inside and out, and is part of the multiple property context on Ward's architecture.","narrative":"Set well back on a large lot in Syracuse's Sedgwick neighborhood, this 1915 house at 223 DeWitt Street was designed by Ward Wellington Ward for John G. Ayling. The first story is faced in tapestry brick, while the second is stucco with half-timbering, under steep cross-gabled roofs. Moravian tile panels are scattered across the exterior. Inside, the house is notable for its many leaded, diamond-paned windows, some with images of trees, animals, fruit, or a book and candle. A Moravian-tiled fireplace with built-in seats, a multi-faceted wood cornice, and an unusual filigree-detailed stair balustrade are other highlights. The house is considered one of Ward's finest Tudor Revival works and remains largely unchanged apart from a modern kitchen. Ayling, born in Syracuse in 1889, was an advertising agent, Army officer, golf champion and military balloonist who died in Italy in World War II. The house is listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1915","architect_builder":"Ward Wellington Ward","architectural_style":"Tudor Revival (Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; substantially intact from its period of construction, with only a modern kitchen installed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.982552-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/11000277.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000277/62556d3364-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000277/62556d3364-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John-G-Ayling-House_2011-06-19a.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John-G-Ayling-House_2011-06-19a.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314055","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_G._Ayling_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q23091392"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/ayling-john-g-house-11000277/"}
