Bundy and designed by local architect Elfred H. Bartoo.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is tied to Harlow E. Bundy, who built the Bundy Manufacturing Company into a leading maker of time recorders and later helped form the company that became IBM. It is also an outstanding, highly intact local example of Queen Anne architecture with a lavishly decorated interior. It is the only surviving residence associated with Bundy's productive career.","narrative":"Built around 1893 at 129 Main Street in Binghamton, this Queen Anne house was designed by local architect Elfred H. Bartoo for Harlow E. Bundy. It has irregular massing, a stone-veneered first floor, upper walls of patterned wood shingles, a conical tower at one corner, and Palladian-style windows in the attic gables. Inside, the rooms are richly finished with wood paneling, stained glass, painted ceilings, parquet floors, built-in cabinetry and a triple-leg oak stair. Bundy lived here from 1893 to 1905, while he built the Bundy Manufacturing Company, maker of mechanical time recorders, into one of the city's major industries. He later helped arrange the mergers that produced the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, renamed IBM in 1924. The house is the only surviving residence linked to his working life and keeps a very high level of original plan and decoration, inside and out. It now operates as a museum.","period_of_significance":"1893-1905","architect_builder":"Elfred Hull Bartoo","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Now operated as a museum (Bundy Museum); the original parlor ceiling is being restored.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.860392-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/11000269.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000269/1ebdd3f40e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000269/1ebdd3f40e-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Ammodramus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bundy_Museum_of_History_and_Art_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ammodramus</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bundy_Museum_of_History_and_Art_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316553","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlow_E._Bundy_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22060942"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/broome-county/bundy-harlow-e-house-11000269/"}
