Hubbard, with a non-contributing outbuilding on the same lot.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house embodies the distinctive characteristics of the Greek Revival style, specifically the Upright and Wing type, in a frame clapboard form. It cites generous proportions of detail, a symmetrical front and a high level of exterior and interior integrity. Few St. Charles examples retain as much integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1854 by carpenter Joel H. Hubbard, this wood-frame house at 304 North Second Avenue in St. Charles, Illinois, is a Greek Revival dwelling of the Upright and Wing type. A gabled one-and-one-half-story main section faces west on a rubble limestone foundation, with a one-story hipped-roof wing to the south. Details include a monumental door surround with sidelights, flat pilasters, cornice returns, wide entablatures and frieze-band windows. Inside, original oak and pine floors, plaster walls, doors and pedimented trim survive. A c. 1900 outbuilding on the lot has been altered and is counted as non-contributing. Hubbard sold the house in 1857 to George and Almira Ferson, and the Ferson, Butler and Satterlee families held it until 1963. Later owners restored it. It is significant for architecture because it is an excellent, highly intact example of Greek Revival design from the town's early development, comparable to nearby listed houses such as the Weisel and Hunt houses.","period_of_significance":"1854","architect_builder":"Hubbard, Joel H.","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival (Upright & Wing)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, well maintained and restored; still used as a single dwelling, with the outbuilding used as an office and guest quarters.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.345754-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/8931/28893114/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/11000244.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000244/c9bd475076-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000244/c9bd475076-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Teemu08 at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hubbard_House_St_Charles.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Teemu08 at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hubbard_House_St_Charles.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893114","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joel_H._Hubbard_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6213510"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/kane-county/hulburd-joel-h-house-11000244/"}
